Tips to Remember

  • Here are a few tips to remember about high school graduation: 
    • Arrive early and give yourself plenty of time. Traffic congestion near the school is likely.
    • To ensure safety, metal detection screenings will take place at all schools. Be prepared to stand in line.
    • Additional security personnel will be assigned to each school.
    • In the event of inclement weather, outdoor ceremonies will be held indoors and require a ticket for admission.
    • Graduation is a formal ceremony. Please refrain from inappropriate cheering and boisterous applause as the students receive diplomas.

    With graduation day almost here, we share with you a video from Channel 21 that brings attention to a former Gaston County Teacher of the Year and the students who began their educational journey in her kindergarten classroom.  The students in her class then are graduating from high school now.  It鈥檚 our special salute to the Class of 2016 and all teachers in Gaston County 草榴社区s who inspire success and shape our future.

Graduate Spotlight

  • Students in the Class of 2016 have spent four years of high school learning, growing, and finding success inside and outside the classroom.

    With the guidance and support of teachers, counselors, coaches, and other school personnel, the students balanced challenging academic courses with volunteer work and athletic schedules. They became school leaders and made a difference in the community, founded their own clubs and nonprofit organizations, and earned state and national awards.

    Their four years of high school in Gaston County 草榴社区s have prepared them for success in college and beyond.

    Some of our graduates have earned full-tuition scholarships to prestigious universities.  They are planning ahead for careers in fields such as engineering, education, journalism, architecture, and business, and some are already planning to return to Gaston County after graduating from college to contribute to their community.

Outstanding Achievements


    Here is a look at a few of our seniors in the Class of 2016 and their outstanding achievements.

    Stephen Moore (Stuart W. Cramer) and Hayes Cloninger (Forestview) received prestigious appointments to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

    Mallory Alman (Ashbrook) won a silver medal at the I-SWEEP international high school science fair in Houston, Texas. She also received the Park Scholarship from N.C. State University valued at $100,000.

    Karigan McCurry (Hunter Huss) was named the state winner in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Allyson Costner (Bessemer City) was one of six students chosen as a Prudential Distinguished Finalist. The awards program recognizes students for volunteerism and contributions to the community.

    Grace Russell (South Point) was one of two students selected to serve as advisers on the State Board of Education.

    Nathan Snyder and Khadijah Watson (Hunter Huss) received a full-tuition scholarship through the QuestBridge program. Nathan plans to attend Emory University, and Khadijah plans to attend the University of Virginia.

    Tyson Fortenberry (Ashbrook) won the 3-A state championships in the shot put and discus throw competitions.

    Carter Frady (Stuart W. Cramer) was nominated for Best Actor in the 2016 Blumey Awards for his role as Link Larkin in “Hairspray.”

    Solomon Collins (Ashbrook) was named a Carolina Panthers “Community Captain.” Only 10 students were chosen for the program, which honors individuals who exemplify excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

    Karan Mirchandani (Stuart W. Cramer) and Linnea Jurs (Forestview) were chosen as The Gaston Gazette’s “Best and Brightest” scholarship winners.

    George Dent (Highland) achieved a perfect score on the Math Level II and Physics SAT subject tests.

    Aliya Saeng Chanh (Ashbrook) earned the “Best in Show” award in the “Through an Artist’s Eyes” exhibition. She plans to attend the University of Nevada at Reno.

    Dalton Jenkins (Hunter Huss) and Lathan Bumgarner (North Gaston) won individual championships at the state high school wrestling tournament.

    Brady Miller (Highland) received a three-year Army ROTC scholarship to attend UNC-Chapel Hill.

    Caroline Greene (Ashbrook) and Whitney Marr (Forestview) received Gold Key awards in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. Caroline was honored for her short story titled “Song of the Sea,” and Whitney received an award for her work, “Marr-Whitney Reflecting Fashion.”
